College of the Desert named its acting superintendent to the permanent role Wednesday, capping a search process that began nearly eight months ago, marred by a breach of confidentiality in its initial search, as well as the board’s decision to place its interim leader on leave.
The board voted 3-2 to approve the appointment of Val Martinez Garcia as the college’s ninth president during a special board meeting, with board president Joel Kinnamon, Rubén Pérez and Mary Jane Sanchez-Fulton in support. Vice Chair Ron Oden and Mark Meyer opposed.
